Chapter 1

Harley Andrews wanted nothing to do with Christmas. It was not the Holiday itself but the memories it dredged up. Memories she did her utmost to forget. What made it worse was the fact that she worked in a place where Christmas, and all its accoutrements, was one of the biggest money spinners of the year!  Coleman’s Department Store was one of the largest in the city and they made a very big deal of Christmas.  The entire chain of stores was decorated to the hilt with every type of tree, ornament and tinsel that could be made and sold. Every year it metamorphosed from an elegantly decorated store into this horror of cheap and nasty tawdriness. And she was forced to work in it day in and day out. Some days it almost made her want to quit but, truth be told, she couldn’t afford to leave her job. Not now that she had finally gotten her life back on track.

Today was just another one filled with the sound of Christmas Carols and the smell of Christmas pudding. Steeling herself for hours of dealing with people on the phone just wanting to complain about everything and sundry, plus screaming children, and pushy and impatient customers and add to that deliveries and stock-filling. She had to constantly remind herself that she had to be pleasant to no matter how nasty or demanding they were. After-all, the customer is always right, right.  Then, of course, there were the other employees with their incessant questions about all sorts of issues from pricing to re-ordering. Straightening her spine and pushing back her shoulders she made her way to her office. At least here, in her own little space, she could close the door and close out the sounds of others enjoying the piped Carols and Egg Nog. Thank God she didn’t have to work in toys that would have been excruciating.  She was definitely not a in the frame of mind to deal with other peoples children. Once upon a time she had loved children but, nowadays, they just made her remember he painful past and she didn’t want that to remember. At least here in the offices she didn’t have to deal with them all up close and personal. At least that’s what she had thought.

No sooner had she sat down at her desk than the Office Manager came in and told her the bad news. She had been reassigned to; yes you guessed it, the toy section. One of the elves had failed to show up for work and since she was the same size, and the newest employee, she had been designated the replacement elf. Could her day get any worse she wondered! Well, in short, yes it could and rapidly. Cursing her luck and vowing to move to somewhere that had no Christmas, she took the uniform from his hand and made her way to the back room to get changed. How fucking undignified for a grown woman, she thought, having to dress like this in green fucking tights and a skirt short enough to show the matching bloomers without bending over. Never again I swear.

Gathering up whatever shred of dignity she could muster in this ludicrous outfit she went out into the store and took her place near Santa. This was her idea of hell. Surrounded by screaming children all wanting to sit on Santa’s lap and the man himself smelling like wet cat. Obviously he had not thought to dry his suit thoroughly before wearing it and now the heat from his obese body combined with that of the lights were making the aroma almost unbearable. The next two hours passed in a morass of children, their crying faces upturned to her and sticky hands grabbing her legs in terror of the nasty smelling fat man on the chair, leering Fathers and Grandfathers and multiple repetitions of the same inappropriate remarks made by these men. God, she couldn’t wait to go home.

Chapter 2

Doing her best to get through this punishment she had been given, because she was sure someone had decided she needed to be punished, Harley shuffled the children forward as each had his or her turn on Santa’s smelly knee. She kept feeling as though she wanted to run as far and fast as she could from this nightmare and then, to top it all off, she noticed a guy in what appeared to be a very expensive suit, staring at her from the back of the crowd. She noticed that he was incredibly good- looking but, at this moment he could have been Johnny freaking Depp and she would not have been interested.  One of the other Elves couldn’t resist saying to her,

“Harley, that guy over there is staring at you and he’s hot. I wish he was staring at me”

“You can have him” Harley shot back.

“Don’t you know who that is?” asked the other girl totally shocked at Harley’s reaction.

“No, Leanne, and I don’t fucking care okay”

“Harley watch your language around the kids! And around him! You really don’t know who he is, do you?”

Harley glared at the girl and in a voice that somewhat lower than her previously too loud one,

“No! I don’t. Why? Should I?”

“Well, yes, you should especially since you work here.  That’s Josh Coleman the owner’s grandson!”

Harley was still not interested and made it known by giving the girl a withering look and saying,

“I don’t care who he is or who his relatives are, I just wish he would stop staring”

She turned to look towards the man and gave him the same look and he, well, he simply laughed….out loud. She was livid. How dare he fucking laugh at me. He was the one doing the staring then he laughs when I give him a dirty look. The fucking cheek! Probably thinks he can get away with anything because of who his grandfather was, well, not with this lil elf. She marched right on over and, looking up into the most impossibly beautiful eyes she had ever seen, lost all power to speak. Up close he was stunning. Then he smiled at her and she was done. Like the proverbial dogs dinner done. And, when he spoke, well, that was her total undoing. In the most sexually arousing voice she had ever heard he simply said,

“Hello Elfling, my name is Josh what’s yours? And why haven’t I met you before today? ”

Harley was unable to answer. She stood there mute and, in her opinion, moronic. Still, all he did was smile stunningly and wait. Eventually she was able to pull herself together enough to respond.

“My name is Harley Andrews and I usually work in the offices. I am only filling in for an absent worker so I don’t usually dress like this I’m not usually down here on the floor, I mean working on the floor, I mean…” she realised she was beginning to babble so she closed her mouth and stopped talking.

“Well, Harley, you are the prettiest Elf I have ever seen but, you are also the surliest one. Do you ever smile or is it just being an Elf that makes you grumpy?”

“Christmas makes me grumpy. I hate it”

“And why is that? If I may ask”

“I hate it for many reasons. The whole thing is just so freaking commercial and it is a holiday meant for families not for people like me” she said. Josh could tell though that this was not the real reason. He was not about to push her though so he said,

“Wow, I apologise for the utter crassness of businesses that  horn in on Christmas. I promise you that I don’t see Christmas as simply a money making holiday. I actually like the way it brings people together for even a short time. I wonder did something bad happen to you at Christmas when you were a child or are you just a natural Scrooge?”

Harley didn’t know if he was joking or actually wanted to know. And calling her a Scrooge was a bit rough. Yes, she didn’t like the holidays but that didn’t make her Scrooge. Did it? She thought for a moment and realised that yes, it did. No matter what her reasons were she should still allow other people to enjoy it.  She wasn’t going to let him know his question had rattled her though so she said in her best surly voice,

“I guess I was just born that way. Why? It shouldn’t matter to you. I am a stranger to you so whether I like Christmas or not shouldn’t matter at all to you”

“Actually it does matter to me. I hate to see a gorgeous woman like you with such a grumpy expression. You should be smiling all the time. Your lips look made for smiling and, well, kissing” and then he leaned down and did just that. Right there in the store and right on the lips. Harley stepped back shocked. She didn’t know whether to slap him or kiss him again. Then she saw him point over his head to the mistletoe hanging there. It had certainly been the best kiss ever but she didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment or not. She decided to walk away. He shouted after her,

“And Harley, just know this, now that we have kissed we are not strangers anymore and I am going to make you change your mind about Christmas. One way or another” then he laughed out loud again and turned and left.

She had spun around at his words and was just in time to watch his perfect ass exit the toy section. Damn, she thought, he is either going to be the best thing to ever happen to me or the worst. One way or another he had said and she wondered exactly what he meant by that!
